Review consensus

Reviewers of the retros say the cushioning is a highlight once the Phylon midsole breaks in, with forefoot Zoom and a heel Air unit giving impact protection. Traction gets mixed marks: it is usable on clean floors but needs wiping on dusty courts, and the stiff outsole limits flex for quicker guards.

About the shoe

The Nike Air Max Penny 1 was Penny Hardaway’s first signature shoe with Nike. Eric Avar designed it, and it released in 1995 ahead of Hardaway’s 1995-96 season with the Orlando Magic; before it, Hardaway wore the Air Flight One for the first half of 1995. The shoe paired an Air Max2 unit in the heel with Tensile Air, later renamed Zoom Air, in the forefoot, and added a 5/8 cut, a grooved Phylon support wing on the lateral side and a “1 Cent” heel logo. The 2022 “Orlando” retro retailed for $170.
