Review consensus

Reviewers of the 2019 retro call it a quick guard's shoe, with low-to-the-ground Zoom Air cushioning that feels fast and responsive, plus herringbone traction that grips reliably on both dusty and clean courts. The ratchet strap, the carbon fiber shank and the outrigger-style midsole provide solid lockdown and stability, and one reviewer said it holds its own against modern performance models.

About the shoe

The Nike Air Zoom GP was Gary Payton’s first signature shoe to carry his initials, released in 1999 after the Zoom Flight ’98 (known as “The Glove”) and the Zoom Hawk Flight. Designed by Eric Avar, it replaced the Glove’s zip-up shroud with an asymmetrical lace cover held down by a ratchet lockdown system inspired by ski boots. It uses Zoom Air cushioning and features Alpha Project detailing. Available sources do not give the original retail price, but the 2019 retro, the first time the model returned, sold for $160.
