Review consensus

No contemporary performance reviews of the Zoom S5 were found. Retrospectives describe a snug, glove-like mid-cut built for lockdown, using an ankle strap system and carbon fiber for stability, with Zoom Air cushioning underfoot. Some writers rank it among the best basketball shoes of its era.

About the shoe

The Nike Zoom S5 was Dawn Staley’s first signature shoe, released as part of Nike’s Alpha Project and debuted during her first WNBA season with the Charlotte Sting in 1999. As the first model in the line, it had no predecessor; it was followed a year later by the Zoom S5 II, after which Nike discontinued the line. The mid-cut design paired an all-leather upper with a lockdown strap bearing her S5 logo, molded carbon fiber for midfoot stability, and Zoom Air cushioning. In 2026, Nike referenced the shoe with a Dawn Staley colourway of A’ja Wilson’s A’Two.
