After being drafted 1st overall in 2016 out of LSU, Simmons sought a lucrative shoe deal that exceeded recent benchmarks for top draft picks. By pitting Nike and adidas against each other in negotiations, Simmons achieved his goal and walked away with a 5-year, $20 million contract with Nike.
The deal is considered unique both for its large base salary and bonuses that could push the contract north of $40 million if Simmons were to win a number of awards including first-team All-NBA and MVP.
Simmons has mostly stuck with Nike’s heavy-duty performance hightops, starting with the Hyperdunk series, followed by the Zoom Rize, the Air Zoom BB NXT, and now the Air Zoom GT Run.
